List Things You're Not Supposed to Do: Listing all of the things that you are not supposed to do is a great twist on the to-do list that you are all used to seeing. But how can that actually help you? It helps to focus your attention toward what you need to do and away from what you're not supposed to do. To use one example, let's pretend that you want to check your e-mail a lot--this is a distraction and keeps you from finishing your to-do list. You can put a line in your to-do list that says, for example, "check email twice a day" and then cross the item off of your list at the end of the day if you have respected it. The fact is that your focus can easily get distributed amongst other things that eat up your productivity and you should try to minimize this as much as you can. Leave the List Visible All Day Long: If you really want your to-do list to get done you need to keep it somewhere that you will always be able to see it so it can act as a constant reminder of what you need to do. You need to focus all of your efforts on ensuring that you cannot ignore your list simply because you get caught up in a distraction and allow your focus to drift away from the list. For instance, let's say that you have your to do list in an application that's open in your web browser - ensure that you don't close this browser so that it's in front of you all time. Besides that, if you keep the list in front of your face, you will start to feel urgent about finishing the list and that helps you keep taking action so that you can finish it.
Have a Separate Section to Write Down Your Ideas: It is not unheard of to get inspired while you work on completing your to-do list--some of the ideas you get can even come with urges to work on them right then.
Obviously you should not give in to your urges here because if you do you won't be able to finish your to-do list. Instead, create a separate space where you can write down the ideas you have and make notes on them if you need to. It's easy to take care of these items later on when you do this because you'll still be able to focus on your primary to-do list.
Once you start applying the tips that we discussed above you'll come to realize that making your to-do list work is not just about taking action, but it's also about organizing yourself the right way.
